The Ros Tapestry Autumn Lecture Series

Margaret Murphy: “Making a Living in the Leinster Lordship: A look at economic life, imports and exports, diet, standard of living, and opportunities for recreation.”

Ros Tapestry Panel - The Thriving Port of Ros
The Thriving Port of Ros: The Economy of the Lordship of Leinster

Date: November 3rd

Time: 7:30pm

Location: Kilkenny Castle

The 12th panel of the Ros Tapestry is titled 'The Thriving Port of Ros', for reasons which will be explored in this 2nd lecture of the Autumn Lecture Series with Dr. Margaret Murphy.

The panel depicts bankers from prominent Italian companies setting up financial centres, offering loans, facilitating exports and investments as well as local trades in wool and animals. It shows imports of wine and the exporting of horses for the armies of Europe among other details. In this lecture, Margaret Murphy will explore all the interesting facets and details of economic life in this period of Irish history.

The talks are free to the public, but booking is necessary because seating is limited.
Book through Eventbrite on the Kilkenny Castle website, https://kilkennycastle.ie/
The talks will also be available on-line in due course.

As we mark the centenary of the transfer of power from Britain to the new Irish State in 1922, it is opportune to look back behind the stories depicted in the Ros Tapestry to the beginning of this period in our history.

This year is also marks the 850th Anniversary of King Henry II’s visit to Ireland and extended stay in Wexford from October to April 1172. Henry’s visit asserted his reign in Ireland and set in motion many of the events depicted in the Ros Tapestry and beyond, right up to the current day.
